I’m trying my best to get into the holiday spirit, but I find in hard in the middle of summer, even after seven years in Australia. This year is the first year I won’t be seeing my family over Christmas, so I’ve been trying extra hard to get the house decorated. James and I got a Christmas tree (a small, cheap plastic one, but a Christmas tree nonetheless) for the first time and I started knitting a mitten garland to hang over it, only to get bored after two mittens. The house is looking more Scandinavian than ever given all of my Swedish Christmas decorations. My favourite thing, however, has to be the little tomtar (elves) that I’ve scatted among Muji’s New York in a bag, one of our souvenirs from the US trip. And the Christmas baking starts tonight. Maybe that’ll help?

I’ve started my not-baking (eight litres of ice-cream and a batch of no-bake truffles). A good carol/ christmas song playlist has been putting me in the mood. A friend just put me onto Straight No Chaser, who have a couple of pretty fab Xmas albums, if you like mens a capella groups. Even if you don’t, their version of the 12 Days of Christmas is an absolute must-watch/ must-listen. There’s loads of recordings on youtube.

I’ve been here 20 years and still cannot get used to christmas in the sunshine. It should be cold, damp and dark at 4 !
