Lumberjack chic

Here’s another long overdue FO. Remember my snowflake vest?

Lumberjack chic

Well, I finished it, and I love it. I knit it as close to the original as possible, except for making the snowflakes slightly smaller and using worsted weight yarn rather than what looks like bulky in the original pictures.

Lumberjack chic

The Cascade 220 I chose for the project worked perfectly for this project. The yarn is woolly, but still reasonably soft, and the colourwork looks nice and crisp in the lovely solid colours.

Detail

However, the colourwork didn’t work out quite expected. I was planning to do stranded colourwork, but I completely forgot about things like floats. Since I wasn’t up for perfecting my non-existant intarsia skills, i ended up doing the whole thing using duplicate stitch. It wasn’t the most elegant method, but it worked out really well.

Detail

While I love the pockets, I think my favourite details is the squishy garter collar. I improvised this after studying the pictures of the original, and I think I may borrow it for future designs.

Lumberjack chic

The only thing that didn’t work out really well is the zipper. It’s slightly too long, which makes it bunch up when I zip it up and hang lower in the front when I leave it open. It’s not the end of the world, but if I work up the energy, I may repace it at some point.

Lumberjack chic

Overall though, I’m very happy with this project. Although I came up with my own pattern for this vest, I won’t be publishing a pattern since it’s not really my design. I think I’ve picture-spammed you all enough, but as always there’s more on Ravelry.

Today is officially two months until Christmas, at least if you celebrate it on the 24th like we do in Sweden. Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year, and I particularly love coming up with the perfect Christmas presents for my loved ones. I’ve already started my shopping (and crafting!) but since I know my family and friends read this blog, I can’t share any details just yet. I can, however, share some of things I’ve been ogling recently.

While most of the world is getting ready for winter, it’s starting to warm up here in Melbourne. It was a glorious 29 degrees (Celsius) here today, which always puts me in a good mood. I picked up some flowers on the way home from work for no reason, and then came home to a new book in the mailbox.

Happy weekend!

This weekend, I’m planning to start packing for an impending move (more on that later!), get my hair cut and hopefully spend my time with my new book. Yes, that’s the blanket. It’s still not finished, but it’s gotten big enough to warm my lap while I knit in the evenings.

Happy weekend!

Second lives

I started knitting four years ago, and in those four years, I’ve amassed quite a number of FOs. My Ravelry page has over two dozen sweaters on it, and I’m not even going to try counting the number of socks. Not all of those FOs were completely successful, but I’ve always valued them for the work I put in.

The thing is, in four years, a lot has changed, including my wardrobe. And a lot of the sweaters I once loved (or thought I would love) have been sitting around unworn in my dresser. While I still felt emotional connections to my knits, i knew I had to do something about it. After all, I clean the rest of my wardrobe regularly. In the end, I offered my unloved sweaters to some friends and family, then posted them on Ravelry.

This is Owls by Kate Davies, knit from Beaverslide McTaggart Tweed in Tamarack. I made it about a year and a half ago, but have only worn it a handful of times. Now it lives with my friend Marianne in North Carolina. It’s a bit surreal to see my knits modelled by somebody on the other side of the world, but I’m so happy to see the sweater loved again.

Doesn’t she look great?

Blanket!

Blanket!

Over a year ago, I learnt to crochet just so I could make a blanket. Of course, once I realised how long it would take to make a whole blanket, I abandoned it. James has been on my case to finish it ever since, and when I couldn’t come up with any other gift ideas for his birthday, I decided to finally listen.

Blanket!

Now it’s been over a month since his birthday and the blanket still isn’t finished. It’s starting to look really good though. I love the colours and how the white borders pull it all together. Hopefully I’ll power through to the end this time.

After the great response I got to Cecilia, I knew I had to put some more of my design ideas into reality. The result is Emelie.

Emelie

This is actually old news by now, but I thought it deserved its own blog post. I was planning to publish the pattern in late July, but unfortunately, life got in the way. I started working full-time only a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been spending every free moment obsessing over an epic birthday project. Since I want to make sure the pattern is the best it can be, I’ve decided to delay publication until next month. The pattern will now be available for download by mid to late August.

Emelie

So consider this a sneak peek.

Emelie

Emelie is a fitted cardigan with a simple lace panel running down the front. It is knit in one piece from the bottom up, with seamless 3/4-length sleeves knit from the top down.  The pattern will be available in 12 sizes, with bust measurements from 27″ to 64″. To achieve perfect fit, there is also the choice of three different body lengths for each size. I’ve knit the shortest length, but you can see the other versions in action by browsing my test knitters’ gorgeous versions on Ravelry.

For now, you can queue Emelie on Ravelry here. More details will be available soon!

Snowflakes

I usually don’t follow celebrity style, but occasionally, I’ll get obsessed with the “star style” threads on The Fashion Spot. As a result, I’ve decided that Michelle Williams is the celebrity whose wardrobe I’d most like to raid. She seems to be fond of all the brands I love and only sometimes manage to afford, like A.P.C. and Steven Alan. I’m particularly taken with this vest from the Steven Alan men’s collection a couple of years ago.

In fact, I love it so much I’ve decided to copy it. I’ve charted out the snowflake in Excel and have purchased my very first Cascade 220. The back is coming along nicely, so hopefully I’ll have a cute vest to show off soon.

Coveted

If you’ve met me in person, you’ll know that dresses are by far my favourite thing to wear. I’ve got quite the collection, but I can’t help drooling over dresses online, especially not the beautiful ones that are out of my price range. In my imaginary life as a millionaire and lady of leisure, these dresses from Rachel Comey and No. 6 hang in my wardrobe.

I’ve had a crush on this letterpress necklace from Erica Weiner for months. It’s such a simple idea, but it looks great and appeals to the geek in me. If only my birthday wasn’t in December…
