As you may or may not be aware, my boyfriend, James, has spent the last three weeks in China for work. Since I knew he’d be dealing with temperatures of -30°C, I jumped at the chance of finally knitting him something warm to wear.

Turn A Square by Jared Flood knit in MadelineTosh Vintage in Graphite {more}
It might not be the most exciting thing I’ve ever knit, but then man-knitting rarely is. And the result is exactly what he wanted, which is the most important thing. The MadTosh was beautiful to work with, and Jared’s pattern is such a great basic hat pattern, even without the stripes. I love the way the neat decreases form a square at the crown.

It’s my sister’s 21st birthday today, so I thought it would be a great time to discuss her Christmas sweater. {More}
In addition to knitting my dad one of my favourite sweaters ever, my sister and I teamed up to make what we believe is the best Christmas present of all time. Obviously, my dad won the present lottery this year.

Translation: “For Dad, From Elin and Jenny, Christmas 2009″
First a bit of background. When my grandmother passed away two years ago, she left behind several moving cartons full of slides that my dad and his siblings discovered in her attic while cleaning out her house. The slides were mostly pictures from their childhoods, pictures that they hadn’t seen in years. They went thousands of slides and picked out the best photos which my cousin then digitised. Since my dad has very few pictures from his childhood, and he only has these pictures in digital form, Jenny and I decided to put together a photobook of my dad’s first twenty years. We had it printed by Photobook Australia, and despite a few problems getting the book to us in time, I’m so pleased with the result. The book is just beautiful, and my dad was thrilled with the gift. Here’s just a selection of spreads from the 80-page book.

Beau by Kim Hargreaves from Vintage Knits knit in Elann Den-M-Nit in Dark Indigo {more}
I said I’d be reporting on Christmas presents this week, and I thought I’d start with the one I’ve been talking about the most, my dad’s Beau. I’ve already covered some of the details: the inspiration behind the sweater and how much I love the yarn. The result is everything I could have hoped for and more. {More}
As some people guessed from my Monday post, I’m knitting my mum a red sweater for Christmas. I had so much fun coming up with an imaginary outfit for Novak, and I thought I’d do it again for this sweater. The pattern is Kim Hargreaves’s Evie, and I’m using Rowan Cashcotton 4 ply in Red Hot. Of course, I won’t be keeping this sweater, but if I did keep it, this is how I’d wear it. Like most of my outfits, this one is very simple. I’d pair the bright red cardigan with a gorgeous black-and-white Mociun dress, black tights and black oxfords.
